Coffee shop pulling Moroni advertisements
But owners plan to sell shirts with LDS trademark for now
By Jared Page
Deseret Morning News
TAYLORSVILLE — The two men making lattes and cappuccinos at Just Add Coffee simply smile and shrug when patrons ask about the official-looking letter displayed on the counter.
Ed Beazer, left, and Van Lidell, owners of Just Add Coffee, display a T-shirt Thursday that the LDS Church has asked them to stop selling, along with a request to remove Moroni from their advertising.
Laura Seitz, Deseret Morning News
"We kinda got in trouble," explains Ed Beazer, co-owner of the shop.
The letter is from The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, specifically its intellectual-property office, and takes issue with an advertising campaign for the coffeehouse that spoofs an LDS Church trademark.
T-shirts being sold at the coffee shop feature an image of the angel Moroni, the golden statue of a male figure in a robe blowing a trumpet that sits atop many LDS temples. In the Just Add Coffee version, Moroni's trumpet is angled upward as coffee from a pot is poured into it.
"It was a spoof," Beazer said. "It was meant to be fun."
It apparently didn't amuse the LDS Church, whose members are discouraged from drinking coffee.
In a letter sent to Beazer's home last week, the shop owner was informed that the image of Moroni is a registered trademark of the LDS Church. The letter also requested that Just Add Coffee discontinue use of the image in advertising campaigns.
The locally owned coffee shop at 5578 S. Redwood Road began featuring the image on greeting cards about a year ago, and at the request of patrons, started featuring it on T-shirts just before Christmas.
Beazer said he and co-owner Van Lidell were not aware that the image was a trademark until last week. The church took issue with the image after it appeared in a newspaper ad on March 9.
At the request of the LDS Church, Beazer said, Just Add Coffee has pulled newspaper ads with the image.
"We're not out to hurt anyone," Beazer said. "We're not out to be mean or spiteful."
But they're not ready to quit selling the T-shirts, either.
"They've been the best-selling T-shirts we've ever done," Beazer said.
Attorneys for Just Add Coffee have sent a letter to church officials to inform them of the shirts and request that the shop owners be sent proof of the trademark.
"If they provide proof, we're going to comply," Beazer said. "We don't want to break any laws or anything."
Church spokesman Scott Trotter confirmed to the Deseret Morning News on Thursday that the image is an LDS Church trademark.
In the meantime, the coffee-drinking Moroni shirts will remain on sale, the owners said.
The shirts come in several sizes and colors and feature the Just Add Coffee logo on the front, with the Moroni image on the back. Short-sleeve shirts cost $9.95, and the long-sleeve version runs $12.95.
"We don't know if we're going to be able to sell them much longer," Lidell said, "so this might be the last chance for people to get them."
John 21:4-14
4 Early in the morning, Jesus stood on the shore, but the disciples did not realize that it was Jesus. 5 He called out to them, "Friends, haven't you any fish?" "No," they answered. 6 He said, "Throw your net on the right side of the boat and you will find some." When they did, they were unable to haul the net in because of the large number of fish. 7 Then the disciple whom Jesus loved said to Peter, "It is the Lord!" As soon as Simon Peter heard him say, "It is the Lord," he wrapped his outer garment around him (for he had taken it off) and jumped into the water. 8 The other disciples followed in the boat, towing the net full of fish, for they were not far from shore, about a hundred yards. 9 When they landed, they saw a fire of burning coals there with fish on it, and some bread. 10 Jesus said to them, "Bring some of the fish you have just caught." 11 Simon Peter climbed aboard and dragged the net ashore. It was full of large fish, 153, but even with so many the net was not torn. 12 Jesus said to them, "Come and have breakfast." None of the disciples dared ask him, "Who are you?" They knew it was the Lord. 13 Jesus came, took the bread and gave it to them, and did the same with the fish. 14 This was now the third time Jesus appeared to his disciples after he was raised from the dead.

I am still alive as you can imagine this is a very old picture of me! The only other clue I'll give you is that I Pastor a little church on the East Coast. "A gospel is being preached that is withering everything that is in sight. Everything that is green and Godly and pure is being withered. The seed is rotten - there is a famine of hearing the pure Word of the Lord.... there is no pasture. The flocks are desolate and hungry. The rivers are drying up. A strange fire is devouring the pastors. Ezekiel says that Shepherds are trampling down the good pasture and eating the best for themselves. What are the shameful disgraceful things that are happening in the Church of Jesus Christ today?"

The blogging world is congested. Some have tried to limit their blog rolls to people they know personally, blogs they think are the "bomb", or teachers the think are the greatest. Yet if I only share with you those who "I approve of" I could miss promoting God's person of the hour. After all he usually prefers the foolish to confound the wise. So if I am looking for the wise, I might miss his foolish vessel. My take: hey high light them all...who knows who God will use one day. Maybe today. So I currently have the largest IHOP & Friends of IHOP Blog Roll. Do I read them all or even agree with them all...no way. So I'll continue to add to that Blog Roll with your help we may someday simply have an entire blog devoted to that purpose.
Yet there is value in me sharing a Blog of note. So today I highlight one of our families' best friends and one of Night Watch's best bloggers. Miss Charity. Random Facts she spoke french in Kindergarten.
So Whose Blog Do You Frequent? Why?

Below you will find two emails that we recently sent to friends and family who are apart of our personal prayer and support team. People responded immediately with an outpouring of prayer. Late yesterday afternoon...we got word of God's response and baby Samuel's release. So why post it here? Because we God answers our prayers we must share it. When weak and broken people like ourselves are allowed the chance to pray and see God move we have to share it. His glory must be proclaimed in all the earth. Because this is a "public" forum I removed our friends' last name from the post.

Have you ever been to the Circus and notice the elephants. It not uncommon to see a group of elephants tethered together only by small ropes attached to the ring of a leg shackle. Why is it that these large powerful creatures seldom break away from such a relativly "weak" restraint? They definitely are powerful enough to break free of this "bondage." Why don't they all just shake free?
The answer lies in conditioning. When Elephants are very young these elephants are chained by the leg to strong stakes. Initially they struggle for weeks to free themselves. However, gradually over a period of weeks they grow conditioned to believe they can't move about freely when they are tied by the right rear leg. From the moment this conditioning takes hold you can tie them with a string and they won't move. The Elephants at the circus don't move because they believe they can't. The chains in their "minds" were stronger than any rope, chain, or restraint known to man.
So you are saying to yourself, "Whats this got to do with me?" The Lord has been highlighting, "The Fear of Man" lately, you know where you don't do something or say something because you fear failure, redicule, or rejection. 2 Tim 1:77 For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind. NKJV
Fear has robbed the church from so much. How many Pastors fail to speak the truth because of fear? How many fail to live as God as called us to because of fear? How many ministries are never started because fear keeps us chained? How many people stay in careers they despise because of fear? How many are never healed because we feared looking foolish if we prayed for them and nothing happened? How many times do we miss sharing Jesus with someone because of fear? You fill in the blank.
But the strength of this type of fear is in our minds. It has no basis in reality. The worst that could happen to us in these situations is much bigger in our minds than in reality. The fear is in our minds; God hasn't conditioned our minds to think and respond like this. We've done it on our own with some additional conditioning by principalities and rulers of darkness.
A small rope is holding you back from something...ask Jesus to help you snap it! Cause you got work to accomplish today!

"If we want religious success that is fine, it can be done on the basis of our own expertise, prowess and religious ability. But if we want our fellowship, our marriage or our life to be for God's glory and not merely our success, then they must all be predicated totally on resurrection ground. The question is, "How far do you want to go?" For most of us, success is all we want, be it religious, marital, or professional. The root problem of the Church is that we have a false center, namely, ourselves, when the true center should more rightly be the glory of God. We never will have gratification and satisfaction until we make that radical adjustment and put God, His interests and the fulfillment of His eternal purposes by which He obtains His glory as the central purposes of our being."

There are more IHOP bloggers out there than anyone imagined. As I promised a week or two ago I am compiling the foremost collection of IHOP Bloggers. Of course there is no way I could possibly keep up with them and have a prayer life, family, school, E-12, Prayer room team, or create an occassional blog entry. I know it is not complete new bloggers are jumping in the river everday. So if you know of someone who is not listed and they should be...let me know. If you are listed and would rather not be...let me know. If your listed be kind and include my blog and website www.soulpants.org or your roll.
Most of these guys are serious bloggers and followers of Jesus. A few are even funnty too! To me its not about highlighting the best...its about sharing the community. Someone who is not a great blogger/word caster today may hit "paydirt" (gold) tomorrow.
Arron James & his beautiful bride on a recent trip to the beautiful Pacific Northwest. I was thrilled to see that it was overcast, and rainy day!
But alas this is not an update on Seattle weather but rather an announcment of Arron's joining the blog realm.
